The youth and sports ministry says Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah gave his consent for Sukma to be held after granting an audience to the prime minister.

In a statement, the youth and sports ministry said the state ruler granted an audience to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Thursday and agreed that Sukma be held from Aug 15-24 with cost-saving measures and prudent spending in place.
Youth and sports minister Dr Taufiq Johari expressed his gratitude to the sultan for his consent and thanked the prime minister for prioritising the nation’s young athletes by deciding to proceed with the games.
“Moreover, Sukma 2026 serves as a key platform for selecting and preparing young athletes to represent Malaysia at the SEA Games, which will be held here next year,” he said.
Taufiq added that he had discussed the matter with Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari, who pledged the state government’s full cooperation to ensure Sukma 2026 is organised in a cost-effective manner.
He added that the Sukma Selangor 2026 secretariat will present the latest updates on preparations, particularly the cost-saving measures, at a meeting this Thursday.
On Monday, Sultan Sharafuddin suggested that the state postpone hosting this year’s Sukma due to the conflict in the Middle East.
The ruler said the state’s hosting of the multi-sport event from Aug 15-24 would incur considerable costs.
Taufiq previously said this year’s Sukma would be scaled down in light of the global energy crisis and ensuing economic impact.
The multi-sport event was set to be held in 53 venues across nine districts in Selangor. The competition was also expected to feature 474 events across 37 sports. - FMT
