KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd has denied viral claims regarding an alleged electricity tariff hike set for April, labelling the circulating messages and visuals as false and misleading.

The national utility provider said there has been no such increase and warned that the spread of such misinformation has the potential to cause unnecessary public alarm.

TNB said any adjustments to electricity costs are governed by the Automatic Fuel Cost Adjustment (AFA) mechanism, which has been in place within the energy sector since July 2025.

This mechanism ensures that rates are adjusted monthly based on fluctuations in global fuel prices and foreign exchange rates, subject to formal verification by the Energy Commission.

"TNB wishes to emphasise that any changes regarding AFA rates will only be announced officially through authorised channels," it said in a statement, adding that the company remains committed to transparency and providing accurate data to consumers.

To curb the spread of misinformation, TNB said it will be reporting the matter to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for further investigation and legal action.

The utility giant urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information, refer exclusively to official announcements from TNB for billing and rate matters, and verify the authenticity of digital content before sharing to prevent confusion.

"Consumers who encounter suspicious information or have inquiries are encouraged to contact TNB Careline via private message on Facebook, direct message to @Tenaga_Nasional on X, or via email at CareLine@myTNB.my," it added. - NST
