His death was confirmed by his younger brother, Jasbant Singh, the group managing editor of news and current affairs at Media Prima Bhd, BuletinTV3 reported.
Karam was a well‑known broadcast journalist, best remembered as a long-time news anchor and investigative reporter for TV3’s Buletin Utama in the 1990s and 2000s.
Regarded as one of Malaysia’s leading environmental journalists, Karam earned a reputation for producing bold, high-impact special reports, particularly on issues involving pollution, public safety and environmental sustainability.
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil extended his condolences to Karam’s family, saying the former newsman made significant contributions to broadcasting.
“May he rest in peace,” Fahmi said in a statement.
Fahmi also said that anyone who watched BuletinTV3, especially from the 1990s to around 2014, would instantly recognise Karam’s presence – most memorably for the signature “pantun” that concluded each of his reports.
Karam served as a broadcast journalist with TV3 from 1995 until his retirement in 2014.
He was a multiple award winner at the Malaysia Press Institute Awards, clinching the “Best Environmental Television Journalist” title in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He was also a two-time recipient of the “Best TV Journalist” award at the Anugerah Seri Angkasa.
He had been suffering from liver and kidney disease for the past few years. - FMT
