JOHOR BARU: MCA has hit out at claims suggesting that the party's candidates who lose in the Johor election will somehow return as appointed assemblymen and even be made state executive councillors.
Its president, Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong, described the claims as 'astonishing' and 'pure fiction'.
Wee, in a Facebook post, said the Johor State Constitution does not allow for such an arrangement to be made.
"Spreading misinformation may make for catchy political rhetoric but does not change the law," he said.
It was reported that the Johor State Legislative Assembly in May passed a bill to amend the state enactment, allowing for the appointment of up to five non-elected state assemblymen to strengthen the composition and functions of the legislative institution. He also dismissed claims that Perikatan Nasional is going easy on Barisan Nasional following Pas' recent decision urging its members and supporters not to support Pakatan Harapan in the July 11 polls.
He said MCA's seats in Jementah, Layang-Layang and Stulang, which are seeing a three-cornered race involving BN, PH and PN, are proof that such claims are untrue.
"Last night, I joined the ceramah in Jementah to campaign for BN candidate See Ann Giap, who is taking on both DAP and Pas in a highly competitive contest.
"If MCA is truly being 'given a free pass' by PN, why would our candidates be fighting both PH and PN on the ground? The facts simply do not support DAP's narrative.
"Every vote in Jementah matters," he said.
In the same post, Wee also praised caretaker Menteri Besar and Johor BN Chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi for his leadership in administering the state.
He said under Onn Hafiz's administration, Johor has remained firmly on the right track, driving economic growth while accelerating infrastructure development across the state.
MCA is fielding 15 candidates, including 11 new faces, in the 16th Johor election. The four retained incumbents are Ling Tian Soon (Yong Peng), Lee Ting Han (Paloh), Tan Chong (Bekok), and Tan Eng Meng (Pekan Nenas). - NST
