Health Ministry open to clinical research on medical marijuana

PARLIAMENT | Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad told the Dewan Rakyat today that there is "space for the ministry to get consent" for clinical research into the use of marijuana for medical purposes.
"The ministry has considered medical marijuana being given space for clinical research – not in terms of planting and cultivation, but for the purposes of treatment, medication and health.
"There is space for us to get consent and permission to conduct tests to verify the application and effectiveness (of medical marijuana) in the treatment of certain illnesses," he said in his winding-up speech.
Last week, a Bersatu lawmaker had urged the Selangor government to consider cultivating marijuana, saying that the state had the potential to become the world's largest producer of the plant.
The use of marijuana for medical purposes came to prominence last September, after 29-year-old Muhammad Lukman was sentenced to death for possessing, processing and distributing medicinal cannabis oil.
The cabinet later placed a moratorium on Lukman's death sentence.
Water, Land and Natural Resources Minister Xavier Jayakumar said at that time that the cabinet had "very briefly" discussed the medicinal value of marijuana in a meeting.
He added, however, that gathering support for legalising medical marijuana would be an "uphill battle." - Mkini
