PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has nothing to gain by apple polishing Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, said Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob.
He was responding to PKR president Anwar Ibrahim telling PAS not to “bodek” (apple polish) the prime minister after Hadi described Mahathir as someone firm and not a dictator.
“The question of apple polishing does not arise at all. What Hadi said is the truth. There is no intention to ‘bodek‘, there is nothing to gain from this,” Ahmad told reporters in Kota Bharu today.
Hadi’s remarks followed Anwar’s daughter and former PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah calling Mahathir a former dictator.
Sharing her thoughts on having to work with Mahathir, Nurul told the Singapore’s Straits Times that it was difficult to do so as the premier was a “former dictator who wreaked much damage on my family and the system.”
However, Hadi argued that Mahathir was simply being firm, especially when faced with a “weak cabinet.”
According to the PAS president, this is an essential trait when dealing with subordinates who are not up to the mark in the prime minister’s administration.
Meanwhile, Ahmad, who is also PAS deputy spiritual leader, attributed Nurul’s remarks to the weakness of the Pakatan Harapan government.
“To me, this is (a reflection) of the internal weakness in Harapan. The people can read this weakness,” he added.
In the interview, Nurul also expressed disappointment with the slow pace of reforms under the current administration.
Previously, PAS leaders had repeatedly claimed that there is an attempt to remove Mahathir through a vote of no-confidence.
Hadi had pledged the full support of the Islamist party’s lawmakers for Mahathir should this attempt materialise.
However, both DAP and PKR have rubbished this allegation.
