CORONAVIRUS | The government has been urged to consider extending or changing operating hours of eateries during Ramadan.
Sabah Indian Muslim Chamber of Commerce and Industry advisor Baisul Khan Salman Faris said this was to allow Muslims to prepare for sahur and the breaking of fast.
He said that currently, Sabah only allowed businesses to operate between 6am to 6pm.
"During Ramadan, these hours are not suitable, especially for Muslim eateries.
"A suitable time would be 3pm until 3am," he said.
He said in some areas, eateries should be allowed to operate from 6am to 3am to cater to their clientele.
"Not every can cook at home... Eatery operators have been receiving request to prepare food (after 6pm)," he said.
Malaysia will observe Ramadan beginning April 23, meaning the movement control order (MCO), which places restrictions on when businesses could operate, would overlap with the Muslim holy month.
So far, most state governments have banned Ramadan bazaars to prevent people from gathering.
Meanwhile, Baisul Khan said members of his association have pledged to ensure patrons maintain social distancing. - Mkini
