Tough action on portals reporting 'confusing, inaccurate' news - minister

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The National Security Council has instructed the police and Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take “stern action” against online media that misreport the news.
Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob announced so after the council met today.
“We have been reading a lot of news coming from online media portals that publish incorrect and untrue news. Especially when it comes to official statements from the government.
“The government takes serious note of these actions because untrue, inaccurate and misleading news can confuse the public, and cause the rakyat to worry.
“We decided in our meeting this morning that MCMC and also the police will take stern action on news portals that broadcast and publish confusing, inaccurate news,” he said.
Ismail thus hoped online media would be more “ethical” in their reporting.
Yesterday, the Information Department tweeted a public service announcement that defined “fake news” as news that “instils hatred towards the ruling government and leaders”.
It cautioned that such news could cause “distrust in the ruling government”.
The department’s other definitions of misinformation included news on the country’s “critical information systems”, news on “extreme teachings”, news that “touches on religious and racial sensitivities”, news that contains “elements of pornography, gambling and fraud” as well as news that “lowers the reputation of an individual, organisation and country”.
Media rights and human rights groups have raised concerns about such “unclear and confusing” definitions of misinformation.
They also cautioned how the label “fake news” could be abused to silence government critics.  - Mkini
