KUCHING: Those with permits from district offices to travel between districts in Sarawak must also get approval from the police effective tomorrow.
On Sunday, it was reported that Sarawak had imposed a ban on inter-district travel, and those with valid reasons to travel must obtain permits from the district office.
“However, starting tomorrow, permits given by district offices to those travelling between districts must also be approved by police,” Sarawak disaster management committee chairman Douglas Uggah Embas said.
At a press conference here today, Uggah also said Sarawak had recorded one more death, involving a man from Kuching, bringing the total of Covid-19 deaths in the state to nine.
There were 23 new cases, bringing the total in the state to 211. Twenty-one of the cases have been warded in the Sarawak General Hospital and two in the Sibu Hospital.
Uggah said there was 95.3% compliance by Sarawakians to the restrictions under the national movement control order (MCO).
Yesterday, police arrested 37 people in the state for flouting the travel restrictions, and 41 have been charged in court so far.
He said that under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988, a person is allowed to travel not more than 10km without any companion, unless necessary, to buy food, daily needs or medicines.
“Those who need to undergo medical check-ups or treatment are allowed to travel with a companion not more than 10km from his or her residence. However, these rules can be relaxed for those living in the interior but they must obtain approval from the nearest police station,” he said. - FMT
