CORONAVIRUS | Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today warned Malaysians against easing up on compliance of the movement control order (MCO) despite the seemingly downward trend of the Covid-19 infections in the country.
He issued the warning after stating that many people could have been buoyed by Health Ministry director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah’s announcement that only 36 new positive coronavirus cases were recorded yesterday, with no deaths.
“I believe many have started to feel that the restrictions should be eased. I hope, as long as the MCO is not over, as long as no new (standard operating procedures) SOP is introduced by the government, the existing rules and SOPs are maintained.
“The question of adhering to the MCO is still everyone’s responsibility. Police will continue to take action against any individuals who break the MCO,” he said during a press conference in Putrajaya this afternoon.
He warned that other countries which have eased restrictions have seen the number of cases increase once more.
Ismail, who is also defence minister, said this after revealing that up to April 20, police have arrested 16,870 individuals for various MCO violations.
Yesterday, the Health Ministry announced the lowest single-day number of coronavirus cases - 36 - since the MCO began. There were also no new deaths recorded yesterday, the first time since March 20.
It was also the fourth straight day in which the country recorded double-digit daily cases since April 16 where there were over a hundred new cases.
Meanwhile, Ismail further stated that 946 people were arrested yesterday, compared to 1,174 the day before, of which 822 were remanded and 124 others were let out on bail.
Of yesterday’s arrests, 433 were picked up at red zones. Red zones are districts with more than 40 recorded Covid-19 cases.
Today it was revealed that the number of red zones in the country, based on active cases, have dropped from 17 to 13.
Police and armed forces have also conducted a total of 824 roadblocks nationwide and inspected up to 603,314 vehicles.
Ismail also said authorities have conducted up to 52,380 spot checks with 6,127 premises inspected. - Mkini
