Door-to-door sale of fish allowed

Kota Kinabalu Fish market is a Seafood Heaven in Borneo, Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama): To make it easier for the public to get their supply of fish during the movement control order (MCO) period, the Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) has introduced the door-to-door sale of fish to homes via a nationwide cash-on-delivery service.
Its director-general Raja Khalid Raja Ariffin said the initiative was the result of a collaboration with 44 fishermen’s associations throughout the country under the National Fishermen’s Association (Nekmat).
He said the public who are interested can place their orders for fish online through www.nekmatbiz.com.my.
“The initiative to market fish directly to the consumers will hopefully reduce congestion in the markets and curb the spread of Covid-19.
“I urge the public not to panic when buying fish as there is sufficient supply in the fishermen’s markets and the controlled fresh markets (PST), ” he said in a statement Friday (April 17).
Raja Khalid said LKIM will also be selling fish online through the Shopee application and consumers will no longer need to go to the market to get their supply.
Separately, he said there was a sufficient supply of fish during the MCO with 185,000 metric tonnes of stock in the market now compared with the monthly 155,000 metric tonnes.
He added that during the MCO period, the 64 LKIM fishermen’s markets throughout the country are still operating as usual within the standard operating procedure set by the National Security Council and the Health Ministry.
“All the fishermen’s markets are operating from morning until noon with security control by LKIM enforcers aided by Rela (Volunteer Corps), the police and armed forces, ” he said.
Raja Khalid said during the MCO period, fishermen’s markets recorded 62,887 visitors with sales amounting to RM2.55mil. – Bernama
