Harapan MPs claim Perikatan hijacking food aid

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Pakatan Harapan MPs are claiming that food aid meant for each constituency is being disrupted due to political interference by Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Each MP was supposed to receive and distribute 1,000 packs of aid worth RM100 that was given by the National Welfare Foundation, which is under the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry.
Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun is also the foundation's chairperson.
According to Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching, her service centre had provided a list of names to the local Social Welfare Department (SWD) office on Sunday.
About 600 families have since received the aid, but Teo now claims that the aid has to be postponed due to political interference.
In her case, she said the SWD had received instructions for the aid to be handed to MCA president Wee Ka Siong to be streamlined.
"The agency had to postpone (the aid) temporarily until they receive new instructions.
"I want to know, did Wee give this instruction? If it's true, why do this when (some) aid has already been delivered," she said in a statement.
Malaysiakini has contacted Wee for comment.
It's not just Teo who has been affected. Hulu Langat MP Hasanuddin Yunus told Malaysiakini that aid in his constituency had also been disrupted.
Citing sources, Hasanuddin said that two days ago orders were given for aid to be distributed by three PN representatives from Umno, PAS and Bersatu instead.
"The information I received is that the order from the minister (Rina) is to give the aid to the three parties (to distribute).
"This is not fair to distribute (aid) through political parties. They (the government) should hand it to a government representative, that is the parliament constituency coordinator (instead)," he said.
However, Hasannuddin said he is unsure if PN had appointed parliament coordinators in opposition constituencies.
