Mongolian Consulate appreciates calls for transparency in cases involving its citizens

Malaysiakini

The Mongolian Consulate has expressed its appreciation over calls by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and others for transparency in the authorities’ handling of the rape case involving two Mongolian women and the holding of three other Mongolian nationals under an Interim Protection Order (IPO).
In a media statement by law firm Thomas Philip today, Mongolian Consul Reynolds Augustine conveyed his gratitude to NGOs, political parties, the law firm, the authorities, and Malaysians over the calls for transparency in the rape case that allegedly involved a police inspector, and the IPO against three Mongolian women who allegedly raised the alarm over the incident.
Augustine noted that the widespread online discussions, media coverage and support have heightened public awareness on the plight of the five Mongolian women, which have seen the police reaffirming their commitment to investigate the case with the highest accountability.
“Although we are functioning under incredibly tough conditions, we are overwhelmed to have received such tremendous support from so many concerned Malaysians with respect to the situation faced by the five Mongolian ladies.
“We are extremely grateful for this support despite the current movement control order (MCO) and are certain that all the attention this case has received will ensure transparency and accountability throughout the investigations,” Augustine said through the statement.
Meanwhile, the law firm’s founder and managing partner Thomas Philip said that they will continue to provide legal assistance to the Mongolian Consulate to ensure that the investigations are run smoothly and in line with the law.
“We have been closely following through on the status of the three acquaintances who had responded to the call for help (by the two who were allegedly raped).
“We have received assurances from the police that they are assisting in the investigations on the basis that these three are not perpetrators and we, like all those who had come forward to support them, are awaiting the outcome of the investigations,” Philip said.
On April 14, it was reported that the three women were first detained and then later put under the IPO, after they lodged a police report over the alleged rape of their two fellow nationals purportedly by a cop. - Mkini
