New guideline for NGOs distributing Covid-19 aid

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | The Social and Welfare Department has come up with a new guideline for NGOs involved in distributing aid directly to vulnerable groups affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.
According to the guideline, any welfare-oriented NGO must register themselves with the nearest state welfare department or district welfare office a day before their intended distribution date.

"Only dry goods and cooked food are allowed to be distributed," it stated.

It was further stated that the groups must adhere to rules set by the National Security Council and listed under the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

The rules are: Temperature checks; wear face masks; wear gloves; carry hand sanitisers; practise social distancing (one metre apart); and limited to only two persons from one NGO.
The new guideline released today follows confusion that arose after Senior Minister Ismail Sabri's advice for NGOs to limit their movements and channel aide to their nearest Social Welfare Department office, rather than distribute directly to the intended recipients.

Various groups had urged the government to reconsider the decision, arguing that it would be an added burden for frontliners already tasked with various duties throughout the movement control order period. - Mkini
