Penang CM outlines three proposals until end of MCO

Malaysiakini

CORONAVIRUS | Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow outlined three suggestions to Putrajaya for the remaining nine days of the movement control order (MCO), which is scheduled to end on April 14.
Topping the list, he hoped that the Health Ministry would provide additional preliminary tests for Covid-19 and simplify the procedure.
"If the need arises, Penang is prepared to provide assistance to the Health Ministry for this initiative in the state.
"In other words, we have to seize this opportunity during the MCO to enable all Covid-19 positive cases to emerge for us to take the necessary steps," he added in his daily Facebook Live session.
Chow also urged the Home Ministry to enforce the MCO at Penang's borders, saying this would help the state break the chain of infection.
"States which have control over immigration matters such as Sabah and Sarawak have implemented such measures earlier," he pointed out.
Apart from this, the chief minister proposed that the International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) and Human Resources Ministry determine and enforce the environment, health and safety protocols for industries.
This is to ensure all production works which are allowed to operate during the MCO adhere to the rules without exception.
"A clearer set of guidelines for important industries and their supporting industries will need to be updated and made known to the public," Chow said.
"I hope the federal government will give due consideration to my suggestions.
"I will officially bring up the above suggestions at the next national security council special meeting on the management of Covid-19," he added.
The government implemented the MCO on March 18. It was scheduled to end on March 31 but was extended to April 14.
Earlier, Federal Territories Minister Annuar Musa hinted that the MCO could be extended further.
As of yesterday, Malaysia recorded 3,662 Covid-19 cases and 61 deaths. - Mkini
