Pollutants at Sungai Meru in Jelapang, Perak has been identified as rubber latex from a nearby glove factory.
Perak exco member Mohd Akmal Kamaruddin, who is acting environment committee chairperson, said workers from the glove factory had forgotten to turn off a valve after cleaning a tank.
“The tank had been washed and the two workers forgot to turn off the valve.
“When the raw material was being transferred into the tank from a tanker, it went straight out," Mohd Akmal was quoted as saying by The Star.
Footage of the pollution had been shared by Environment Minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man this morning.
Mohd Akmal said the accident is believed to have happened on Thursday afternoon and has since affected at least a 1km stretch of the river.
“The factory was also late to inform the government, only letting us know on Thursday at about 11pm.
“The Environment Department has taken samples from the river to be analysed, ” he said.
“We have also ordered the factory to clean up the river immediately, ” he added.
The factory had permission to operate during the movement control order.
Tuan Ibrahim is expected to address the matter later. - Mkini
