CORONAVIRUS | Two Sarawak ministers have quarantined themselves after meeting a person who subsequently tested positive for Covid-19, Deputy Chief Minister Douglas Uggah Embas reportedly said.
The two are Deputy Chief Minister Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and state minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Fatimah Abdullah.
The Malaysian Insight quoted Uggah (photo) as saying the two ministers had met with a resident from Samarahan on March 27, who later tested positive and became the state’s 33rd case.
The duo had begun their quarantine today.
Uggah also reportedly denied the two ministers had tested positive for the disease.
“The rule is if you have had close contact or casual contact in a meeting, all the people in the meeting are required to be quarantined,” he was quoted as saying.
Effective Saturday, Uggah said everyone entering Sarawak will be automatically placed in a quarantine centre at their point of entry, even in hotels at the state government’s expense.
He added that seven healthcare workers - comprising five doctors and two nurses - had contracted the disease.
One nurse based in the Depak district clinic in Betong contracted the disease after coming into contact with members of the tabligh cluster.
Eight members of the missionary group had tested positive and have been quarantined in Betong.
The other six healthcare workers had contracted the disease at Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching, the report said. - Mkini
