Women's ministry denies rise in domestic abuse during MCO

Malaysiakini

The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) has refuted an article on a rise in domestic violence recorded via the ministry’s helpline, "Talian Kasih".
The ministry in a statement today clarified that the article on a 57 percent increase in domestic violence cases during the movement control order period was not true.
“KPWKM wishes to stress that the percentage increase in calls covers all categories including cases on Covid-19, Welfare Department aid reference, counselling and others.
“All parties are told not to misinterpret the data on domestic violence and child abuse calls posted on the ministry's portal for the purpose of writing articles or announcements,” the statement said.
According to the statement, all parties have been told to refer to verified sources and obtain the ministry’s explanation before making any statements via any communication channels.
"KPWKM views seriously all calls received including domestic violence and abuse especially during MCO and swift actions would be taken by the Welfare Department (JKM) under the Child Act 2001 (2017 amendment) as well as the Domestic Violence Act 1994,” the statement said.
Yesterday, a news portal reported that domestic violence cases had risen 57 percent during the MCO period. - Bernama
