No absolute powers in Bersatu constitution to sack anyone, says Syed Saddiq

PUTRAJAYA: The Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) party constitution does not provide anyone absolute powers to terminate an individual's party membership, says youth wing (Armada) chief Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (pic).
According to Syed Saddiq, the Bersatu constitution was drafted based on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin's experience of being sacked as the Umno deputy president for voicing out against Datuk Seri Najib Razak on the 1MDB scandal in 2016.
"He wasn't referred to the disciplinary board and asked to make a stand.
"So, when we drafted the Bersatu Constitution, the clause (that provides absolute powers to terminate memberships) in Umno's Constitution is not included," he claimed, during a press conference at Putrajaya on Sunday (May 31).
Syed Saddiq was speaking in his capacity as the Armada chief. However, his position as the Armada chief is in question as he was dropped by Bersatu as a member last Thursday (May 28).
Therefore, said Syed Saddiq, the nullification of his membership, along with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Datuk Amiruddin Hamzah, Dr Maszlee Malik, was unfair and invalid.
Last Thursday, Bersatu organising secretary Kapt (R) Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya sent a letter to the five, informing them that their respective party memberships were nullified as they had chosen to sit together with the Opposition during the one-day May 18 Parliament sitting.
Elaborating on the matter, Syed Saddiq said the five actually chose to sit in a bloc that does not side Pakatan nor Perikatan Nasional.
"We decided to sit in the middle as independent Bersatu MPs because this is our last stand in Parliament. The accusation of us sitting together with Pakatan isn't correct.
"This is important because it is closely related to Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin, who used the party constitution to sack the five," added Syed Saddiq.
Meanwhile, Syed Saddiq said Armada will use all legal avenues to address the sacking of the five.
"We will follow present channels which is ensuring our stand is listened to by the Registrar of Societies (RoS) and the law. We follow the law," he added. - Star
