Figures and individuals will always dominate the political scenario but we must educate the people to focus instead at the political content of the struggle, said a Pakatan Harapan leader.
Amanah president Mujahid Yusof Rawa said it was time for politics of the day to go beyond numbers and individuals.
The Parit Buntar MP asked if a political struggle was for power and politics alone.
"Or is it for the greater good of all of us, is it for preserving justice, accountability and improving the welfare of the people?" Mujahid asked.
"Those in Perikatan Nasional (PN) do not represent this desire because they were brought together only in the interests of distributing positions," he told Malaysiakini.
Mujahid was referring to clash between the PN and Harapan blocs in Parliament, with both factions claiming to have the numbers to unseat the other.
Several quarters have lodged reports with the MACC against Muhyiddin for allegedly using government-linked appointments to entice MPs to support him.
Mujahid claimed that it was clearly Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's intent to topple the Harapan government, which collapsed in February, following the resignation of then Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Mahathir had resigned in protest against his party Bersatu after it exited Harapan after 22 months of the coalition governing the country post-GE14 in 2018.
Harapan's fall came after the Sheraton Move which saw former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali leading several defectors to join forces with Umno and PAS to support Muhyiddin.
"The Azmin faction and the Bersatu faction have long been planning this while Umno and PAS were just waiting for their chance to save themselves," Mujahid said.
"Is this what Malaysians want?
"A government that stands on the basis of 'one for you, one for me' or a government that upholds the principles of democracy, legal principles and social justice?" Mujahid posed.
Mujahid emphasised that the struggle was never based on the individual even though the individual was a catalyst and an example to follow.
He said the struggle for the nation was on the realisation that the nation must be built on the principles of democracy, justice and welfare.
He added that any leader who wants to be supported should be bound by these ideals.
"Is it time for us talk about numbers while individuals are seeking power, or should we be asking ourselves what our aspirations and struggles for the country really are?" Mujahid asked.
"PN is no doubt a shaky government with no vision but as numbers and individuals continue to dominate the political scenario, Harapan will have to struggle once again to realise its ambitious goals for all Malaysians," Mujahid said. - Mkini
