Johor Bersatu reps meet Muhyiddin after sultan threatens snap polls

Malaysiakini

Johor Bersatu assemblypersons met party president Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin last night, following reports that the Johor Perikatan Nasional (PN) government is in a precarious position.
This also came after Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar’s decree threatening snap polls if there is another power struggle in the state.
“All assemblypersons who were present (at the meeting with Muhyiddin) acquiesce with the Johor sultan’s decree and together will uphold the rakyat’s welfare and at the same time strengthen Johor Bersatu as a supporter of the state government,” said Johor Bersatu assemblypersons in a joint statement today.
They also said that the meeting with Muhyiddin was also attended by Pemanis assemblyperson Chong Fat Full who had previously resigned from PKR to become a PN-friendly independent.
However, former Johor menteri besar Osman Sapian (photo) did not attend the meeting.
The statement said all assemblypersons who attended the meeting had stated their full support for Muhyiddin as the prime minister.
“In the meeting which lasted almost two hours, Muhyiddin as Bersatu president also received full support regarding the position of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad who has had his Bersatu membership terminated,” they said.
Johor Bersatu also looks favourably upon Muhyiddin’s performance in navigating the country through the economic and social issues faced by the rakyat due to the Covid-19 pandemic, they said.
As a sign of their loyalty to Muhyiddin as the prime minister and Bersatu president, Johor Bersatu assemblypersons had gifted Muhyiddin T-shirts with the slogan “Ikut Nasihat Abah; Kita Mesti Menang” (Follow Abah’s Advice; We Will Win).
Sultan Ibrahim (photo) had said yesterday that he would dissolve the state assembly immediately should there be another power struggle in the state.
His decree came after Johor Pakatan Harapan claimed they have the numbers to seize back the state after PN took over in February.
Speculation is that Harapan will secure Bersatu assemblypersons who want to cross over from PN.
PN has just 29 state seats in Johor, against 27 from Harapan. A single defection from PN would cause a hung assembly.
PN had come to power in March after Muhyiddin, who is also the Gambir assemblyperson, took his party out of Harapan. - Mkini
