A group of NGOs is organising an online 'parliament' session next month to show that virtual debate is a viable option for the Dewan Rakyat.
In a statement on the 'Parlimen Digital' Facebook page, the organisers, Challenger Malaysia, Undi 18, and Liga Rakyat Demokratik, called for Malaysian youths to fill the 222 seats it will provide for the initiative.
"We are coming together to organise Parlimen Digital, a platform to gather 222 youths virtually over a weekend to debate, discuss, and pass policies.
"The idea is to showcase that a virtual parliament is possible, and if we can do it, the Malaysian government should be able to as well," they said in the post.
The number of seats in Parlimen Digital mirrors the Malaysian parliament's own 222 seats.
According to the Facebook page, the three NGOs are supported by nine other organisations. Parlimen Digital is scheduled to be held between July 4 and 5.
The organisers said they are giving the opportunity to Malaysian youths aged between 15 and 35 to join the digital parliament.
Those interested to participate can register via a link on their Facebook page.
The first Dewan Rakyat session for 2020 was held on May 18. It made history by being the first session to be shortened by the government to only one day and to only include a single agenda - the opening ceremony by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The Perikatan Nasional government cited fear of Covid-19 infection as the reason for shortening the session. The opposition disputed this and said it was a move to prevent a vote of no confidence being made against prime minister Muyhiddin Yassin. - Mkini
