PN not a strong gov't, snap polls the best solution - Ismail

Malaysiakini

Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the current Perikatan Nasional government was not a strong one and is facing constant pressure from the opposition due to its thin majority and these problems can best be resolved in a snap poll.
"Overall, the government today is not strong. That is why the best solution is to return the mandate for the people to decide.
"For me, if the government dissolves Parliament today, I am confident we can win the election," Ismail told an interview with Sinar Harian.
The defence minister, who is also the senior minister overseeing the movement control order during the Covid-19 pandemic, said the PN government was working on reviving businesses but is faced with an opposition playing politics.
He said PN should be allowed to serve the rest of the Parliament term but conceded that this was unlikely to happen due to constant pressure from the opposition.
"The opposition is still putting pressure, talking about toppling the current government and initiating a vote of no-confidence against the prime minister.
"This is despite knowing that the prime minister (Muhyiddin Yassin) enjoys a high rating as the people are confident in his leadership," he said.
Ismail said Muhyiddin, who has a three-seat majority in the 222-member Dewan Rakyat, is at the mercy of MPs.
"If it were in the hands of the people, there would be no problem. But it is in the hands of MPs, and the difference in MPs (between PN and Pakatan Harapan) is not much.
"That is why I am of the view if that is what the opposition wants, then it is better we let the people decide.
"The opposition claims they are accepted by the people and do not accept us. Let the people decide who they really accept," he said.
The Harapan government, which came into power in the 2018 general election, collapsed in late February Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin pulled his party out of the coalition government.
Muhyiddin was sworn in as the new prime minister on March 1 after forming a new coalition comprising Bersatu, PKR defectors, BN, PAS, GPS, PBS and Star. - Mkini
