Police: No foul play in Nepali’s death in custody

Malaysiakini

Police have found no signs of foul play in the death of a 37-year old detainee at a police lockup on Sunday, said Kuala Lumpur police chief Mazlan Lazim.
He said police have investigated the death and questioned the detainee's cellmates, though autopsy and laboratory reports are still pending at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital where the body is kept.
“For now, the case is classified as sudden death,” Mazlan said in a statement today.
He urged members of the public who may have information on the case to come forward by contacting the investigating officer Mohaneswaran Thiagarajah via phone number 016-446 1605, via the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999, or any nearby police station.
Earlier today, the NGO Eliminating Deaths and Abuse in Custody (Edict) claimed a 26-year old Nepali national Dhan Bahdur was remanded at the Jinjang Lockup from May 27 to June 10, but died on May 31.
Edict also alleged several violations of legal requirements pertaining to the handling of deaths in police custody.
In Mazlan’s statement, however, Mazlan identified the deceased as a 37-year old instead of a 26-year-old but gave the same dates for his remand period and the date of his death. Mazlan did not name the deceased.
Elaborating on the case, he said the deceased was arrested on May 27 for allegedly failing to show identification documents and allegedly violating conditions under the Private Agencies Act 1971.
The Private Agencies Act regulates the private security industry in Malaysia. - Mkini
