Give stranded varsity students RM500 each, urges Umno Youth

Many university students were affected by the last-minute postponement of face-to-face registration at higher education institutions.

PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki has urged Putrajaya to consider giving a one-off payment of RM500 to students affected by the postponement of face-to-face registration at higher education institutions.

He said this would ease their burden in paying for transport and lodging costs following the higher education ministry’s last-minute announcement.

“Although the ministry has a strong justification in not wanting to take risks with the outbreak of Covid-19, the reality is that the last-minute decision has affected a large number of students,” Asyraf said in a Facebook post today.

“Umno Youth urges the ministry to raise this proposal at the Cabinet meeting this week, to reduce the burden of students and their families.”

The ministry had urged higher education institutions to postpone all physical and face-to-face student admissions following the spike in Covid-19 cases.

It said the decision was made after concerns were raised by students, parents and the public of the Covid-19 situation just a few days before the admission date for new university students.

The minister, Noraini Ahmad, has apologised for any inconvenience caused by the last-minute decision.

She said those who had already arrived on the campuses could stay until further instructions from their universities. - FMT
