Covid-19: HUSM nurse is latest frontliner casualty

A nurse at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital (HUSM) in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan became the latest casualty due to the Covid-19 pandemic when she succumbed to the virus last night.

According to a close family member, the victim, aged 52, died at 10.15pm while receiving treatment at the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Bharu.

She left behind a husband and two children.

According to the family member, who did not want to be identified, the victim was admitted to the hospital on Dec 7 after she was tested positive for Covid-19.

Malaysiakini learned from sources that she was discovered to be Covid-19 positive during contact tracing activity linked to the Hilir Cluster associated with HUSM.

A visit by Malaysiakini to the Nilam Baru Cemetery in Kota Bharu this morning found that the victim was buried there about 11am.

The burial was attended by some 20 members of the Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department's Hazardous Materials Team and Kelantan state Health Department, who were in full personal protective equipment.

Several family members were also seen witnessing the burial process from afar.

Meanwhile, sources said that the victim was a chief nurse (sister) attached to the HUSM surgical intensive care unit, and among those who were ordered to undergo quarantine during the early stage of the outbreak at the hospital.

For the record, the death is the sixth casualty linked to the pandemic recorded in Kelantan.

Malaysiakini has contacted the top management of HUSM for comment.

As of noon yesterday (Tuesday), the Hilir Cluster has recorded a total of 27 positive cases. Five patients are still receiving treatment, including one in intensive care, while the other 22 have recovered from the virus. - Mkini
