RANTAU PANJANG: Police today urged those with urgent needs to cross the border to Thailand and vice-versa to do so legally.

Kelantan police chief Deputy Commissioner Datuk Shafien Mamat said the borders between both countries were still off limit due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

"I urge Malaysians especially the Kelantanese to adhere to the rules strictly and not be caught for entering the neighbouring country illegally.

"If they have to travel to Thailand due to urgent matters, they must use the legal routes instead of the llegal jetties," he told reporters here.

Shafien was commenting on several cases of Malaysian men caught entering Thailand illegally especially via illegal jetties along the border here.

The desperate Malaysian men crossed over Sungai Golok just to see their family after being separated by the pandemic and movement restrictions in both countries.

Meanwhile, Sungai Golok Deputy Mayor Che Rosdi Che Omar said more Thais who work in Kelantan, were arrested by its border agencies when they entered the Sungai Golok town via illegal jetties in Rantau Panjang.

"The Thai authorities have identified certain areas along the Kelantan/Thai border that were used by these people regularly.

"Since last week, more than 10 Thais mostly women were arrested for entering and leaving the kingdom via the illegal routes. Majority of them crossed over during nightime," he added. - NST
