More flood evacuees expected as high tide returns tonight

 The continuous heavy rain and high tide that is expected to hit coastal areas at 11.30pm tonight could result in more people being evacuated due to rising water levels.- NSTP/GHAZALI KORI.

SETIU: The number of flood evacuees in Terengganu rose to 832 people today, affecting mostly residents in low-lying areas in six districts.

The continuous heavy rain and high tide that is expected to hit coastal areas at 11.30pm tonight could result in more people being evacuated due to rising water levels.

As of 7pm, 184 people from 51 families in Kuala Terengganu have been placed at four relief centres, and 155 people from 38 families in Kuala Nerus were relocated to three relief centres.

In Dungun, 59 people from 19 families have been placed at three relief centres, while Marang saw 301 people from 82 families seeking shelter at four relief centres.

In Kemaman, 94 people from 30 families have been evacuated to three relief centres, while in Setiu 39 people from 12 families were placed at four relief centres.

State Civil Defence Force director Lt- Col (PA) Che Adam Abdul Rahman said with the continuous rain in Kuala Terengganu and Marang tonight, his team had been put on standby for any eventuality.

"We are also monitoring the residential areas that could be affected by the high tide phenomenon tonight," he said, adding that the sea level was likely to rise by 2.0 metres. - NST
