Sarawak to learn from Estonia, South Korea to achieve high-income state by 2030

Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg says the key factor to drive Sarawak to become a high-income state is a quality civil service.

KUCHING: Sarawak Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg says he is confident Sarawak can become a high-income and developed state by 2030, by focusing on digital and knowledge-based economy.

He said the government is learning from two countries, namely Estonia, in terms of their digital infrastructure development, and South Korea, for their knowledge-based economy.

Estonia, he said, is recognised as one of the most advanced digital societies in the world, while South Korea has been focusing on education, science, technology and innovation to produce quality manpower.

“We need a quality workforce, especially in our civil service, which is a key factor to drive Sarawak to become a high-income state by 2030,” he said at an event near here today.

Abang Johari said in the modern era, citizens were better educated with ready access to technologies that not only force governments to be more transparent but also to rethink notions of transparency.

“We need to modernise service delivery that focuses on citizen-centred and approach-based outcomes. The people are expecting more efficient and effective service.

“Therefore, I would like to pose this new challenge to all civil services, that these citizen-centric innovative solutions be further developed and improved.

“The civil service plays an important role in helping the government to develop the state and to become closer with the people,” he said. - FMT
