Terengganu - 439 flood victims evacuated to nine centres

High rainfall coinciding with the height of the high tide phenomenon has caused some low-lying areas near the coast in Terengganu to be flooded last night.

Terengganu State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat chief Lieutenant Colonel (MCDF) Che Adam A Rahman said the third wave of floods this time resulted in 439 people from 124 families being evacuated in stages to nine temporary evacuation centres (PPS) in four districts.

"The highest number of victims as of today at 8 am is in Marang which houses 156 victims from 42 families at Sekolah Kebangsaan Rusila.

"In Kuala Terengganu, three PPS were opened to house 114 victims from 36 families. Similarly, in Kuala Nerus, there are three PPSs currently operating to house 96 victims from 22 families while in Kemaman, 73 victims from 24 families are in two PPSs," he told reporters today.

Che Adam said according to the report of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) 190 millimetres (mm) of rainfall fell in six to eight hours last night compared to 200 mm to 250 mm for a whole month.

"The phenomenon prevents water from reaching the sea smoothly and causes most areas in the city of Kuala Terengganu to be flooded," he said.

In PERAK, only one centre was still open in the Kerian district until eight this morning.

A spokesperson for the Perak Fire and Rescue Department said 27 flood victims from eight families were housed at the PPS after their houses in Kampung Matang Tengah, Beriah was flooded last Monday.

In KELANTAN, the number of flood victims housed at the Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Tok Deh, Pasir Mas remained at 18 people involving three families as of 8 this morning.

Pasir Mas District Social Welfare Department officer Azizan Aziz said, all the victims, including a baby boy, were still not allowed to return as their settlements were still flooded due to unpredictable weather conditions. - Bernama
