Umno lays claim to Perak MB post

Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman says Umno has the lion’s share of assemblymen in Perak although it is the Sultan’s prerogative to pick a new menteri besar.

PETALING JAYA: Umno has staked its claim on the Perak menteri besar’s post after Ahmad Faizal Azumu was ousted in a confidence motion at the state assembly today.

Umno warlord Tajuddin Abdul Rahman says it was only logical that the new menteri besar be from his party as Umno has the most number of assemblymen in Perak.

“We have the lion’s share (of assemblymen). But it is still the prerogative of the Sultan,” he told FMT.

Faizal lost his post after 48 of the 59 assemblymen voted against a motion of confidence in him. There were 10 votes in support of Faizal and one spoilt vote.

Faizal is also PPBM’s vice-president while Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is the party president.

Tajuddin, the outspoken Pasir Salak MP, claimed Faizal was becoming “unpopular” and this could be seen from the dismal support he received at the assembly.

He said most people were probably not happy with Faizal because his performance “has not been up to the mark”, adding that the people of Perak deserved a leader who is hardworking and serves them well.

He said Perak, as a rich state, needed an effective leader.

Barisan Nasional has 25 seats in the state assembly, PPBM five and PAS three. Gerakan has one assemblyman and there is also an independent. Pakatan Harapan has 24 state seats with DAP having 16, Amanah five and PKR three. - FMT
