Bersatu will decide on its relationship with Umno this evening.
This is after Umno sent a letter, saying it would not cooperate with Bersatu once the 15th general election kicks off.
Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin (above) said besides internal deliberations, the Umno situation would also be discussed at a forthcoming PN supreme council meeting with leaders from PAS, Star, SAPP and Gerakan.
In a statement issued this morning, Hamzah confirmed that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had sent the letter on Feb 26.
He also confirmed that the Umno supreme council had made the decision to end ties with Bersatu at its meeting in Janda Baik, Pahang, on Feb 19.
Hamzah said that Umno had also decided that it can continue being in the PN government until Parliament is dissolved.
At present, Umno has eight members in the federal cabinet.
Previously, on Jan 9, the Umno supreme council agreed with the motion to terminate its cooperation with Bersatu ahead of the 15th general election.
However, Zahid said a final decision on the motion still needed to be validated by the party’s highest decision-making body - the Umno general assembly - which was supposed to be held on Jan 31.
However, Umno was forced to postpone the assembly following the implementation of the second movement control order. It has been rescheduled to March 27-28.
Former Umno and BN secretary-general Annuar Musa, who is in the PN cabinet, said ending ties with Bersatu would be a loss to Umno as it would have to face the election alone. - Mkini
