KUALA LUMPUR: A “Datuk Seri” who allegedly sexually assaulted his 20-year-old daughter will be charged on Tuesday.

In a statement, Kuala Lumpur police chief Saiful Azly Kamaruddin said the suspect will be brought to the Kuala Lumpur Courts Complex. He also said the suspect was not in good health now.

Police also denied media reports which claimed there were delays in charging the man and investigating the case.

“Media reports which stated that the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) and police took two months to charge the suspect are inaccurate,” he said.

The Kuala Lumpur police chief also denied reports that the investigation paper (IP) was referred to the attorney-general on Jan 26, saying the complete IP was only handed over on Feb 25.

“The IP had to be referred to the DPP a few times considering that the assault has allegedly been taking place since 10 years ago,” he said.

The police said they will be applying for a protection order (PO) to protect the victim and her younger siblings from any form of harassment from the suspect.

Saiful said the victim had initially rejected an interim protection order since the order would have applied only to herself. “The victim wanted her siblings to be protected, too.”

Meanwhile, the police urged members of the public to contact the Kuala Lumpur police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or any nearby police station if they had any information on the case.

It was reported before that lawyer K Ganesh, representing the 20-year-old woman, had urged the police to provide her with protection as she had gone public with her allegations.

He also questioned why charges have not been filed, claiming that the suspect was released from police custody two months ago. He added that the woman lodged the police report on her assault on Jan 14. - FMT
