Deputy speaker launches Parliament virtual run, MPs not invited

Dewan Rakyat Deputy Speaker Rashid Hasnon officiated at the Parliament Virtual Run 2021 yesterday, with a 1.1km run on Parliament grounds.

MPs, however, told Malaysiakini they were not invited to participate in the 10-day virtual event.

Lawmakers for Pasir Gudang (Hassan Abdul Karim), Segambut (Hannah Yeoh), Serdang (Ong Kian Ming) and Ipoh Timur (Wong Kah Woh) replied in the negative when asked if they were invited to take part.

Johor Bahru MP Akmal Nasir, in a tweet last night, took a jab at Rashid over the run.

"Hope he finds the entrance and opens the Dewan (Rakyat) for MPs to convene.

"You can do a virtual run, but are afraid of debates," Akmal said.

The virtual run was organised by the Parliament National Association of Wives of Civil Servants and Women Civil Servants (Puspanita), and the Parliament Welfare and Sports Club (Kespa)

Parliament was suspended when the emergency was declared in January.

However, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah has since said that Parliament can convene during the emergency, but that he would act on the advice of the government.

De facto Law Minister Takiyuddin Hassan has said that the sitting of Parliament was being delayed until after the emergency ends on Aug 1, so that the government could focus on the Covid-19 pandemic.

Takiyuddin also argued that 100 MPs were in the high-risk Covid-19 group due to their age.

Umno's Pontian MP Ahmad Maslan, however, said this did not make sense as 120 MPs were below 60, and that the quorum for the Dewan Rakyat was just 26.

Furthermore, MPs are also being vaccinated for Covid-19 together with frontliners.

Critics claim that the PN government does not have a majority in Parliament despite securing three defections from PKR. - Mkini
