KOTA BARU: Pas said it expects to send a letter to Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah expressing its regret over his statement labelling the Islamic party as a "political prostitute" party, this week.

Pas secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision to send the letter to Tengku Razaleigh, also known as Ku Li, was made by the party's central committee.

"I have already written the letter and it is in the process of being sent to him in a few days.

"We are saddened by his statement but we choose the middle path by sending a letter to him, expressing our regret and our unhappiness with the remark which should not have been uttered by a veteran politician.

"We respect him as an old friend and as a friend, we should respect each other," he said.

The Kota Baru MP told this to reporters after presenting tablets to 100 students who would sit for the SPM examination this year.

Takiyuddin who is also Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Parliament and Law Affairs) said Tengku Razaleigh's statement was wrong and could not be accepted.

"Pas hopes he will not repeat the same statement and this 'request' will also be stated in the letter," he said.

Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man was reported to have said the statement made by the Umno advisory board chairman was uncalled for as the remark was done publicly through the media.

He said Pas and Umno have good relations in Muafakat Nasional (MN) and they have a platform to discuss matters.

Tuan Ibrahim also described the statement as Tengku Razaleigh's personal opinion and not Umno's.

Tengku Razaleigh in an interview with a news portal was quoted as saying that Pas was a "political prostitute" that needed to be defeated in the next general election.

He described the party's actions during several by-elections held previously as proof that the party could not be trusted. - NST
