PKR today has issued a legal letter to Steven Choong, giving him seven days to pay RM10 million for defecting from the political party.
In the event that the Tebrau MP, who is now an independent lawmaker, does not comply with the letter of demand, then PKR would file a lawsuit against him.
In a media statement issued today, party treasurer Lee Chean Chung confirmed that the letter of demand has been issued to Choong.
On Feb 28, it was reported that Choong and Julau MP Larry Sng have decided to leave PKR and support the Perikatan Nasional administration under Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as independents.
The former PKR duo cited their constituencies’ interest as the driving force behind their leaving the party to support Muhyiddin.
Lee said the legal letter was issued against Choong as the latter had contested under the party banner and thus bound by the party’s agreement.
Lee though noted that Sng is not bound by the same agreement as the latter contested as an independent during the 14th general election and only later joined PKR.
“In relation to the betrayal by two Members of Parliament, Keadilan (PKR) has issued an RM10 million letter of demand to Tebrau MP Steven Choong.
“He needs to pay the compensation within seven days, and if not, court action would be taken.
“Julau MP Larry Sng did not contest under Keadilan in GE14, therefore is not bound by the agreement,” Lee said.
Last Saturday, PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution said that due to a possible resumption of Parliament, certain parties have stepped up their efforts to convince opposition MPs to jump ship.
He said the move was being made because the current government has lost the support of the majority in Parliament following the withdrawal of support of three Umno MPs, and has now been told by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that a parliamentary session can be held even while the emergency is in force.
Saifuddin had also urged Muhyiddin to stop trying to prop up a “weak” government, following the defections by Sng and Choong.
PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, meanwhile, claimed that the duo’s defections were due to coercion, threats and pressure from the Perikatan Nasional administration.
Anwar had also claimed that the PN government still lacks the numbers to command majority support in Parliament, in spite of the defections. - Mkini
