PETALING JAYA: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has announced a joint venture with a Singapore-based solar firm to trial clean electricity exports to the island republic.

TNB said the partnership with Sunseap Group will see the export of 100 megawatt (MW) of electricity, generated from renewable energy sources, Reuters reported.

However, no other details were provided.

“The venture will contribute to Singapore’s long-term efforts to power its future ‘through clean and green energy sources’,” Sunseap chief executive Frank Phuan was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Singapore had in October said it planned to trial clean energy imports from Malaysia over two years to refine the technical and regulatory frameworks for power imports. It is also part of a series of moves aimed at reducing its carbon footprint.

The electricity to be imported by the partners could account for about 1.5% of Singapore’s peak electricity demand, Reuters reported.

If successful, the two companies will invest in multiple solar farms across Malaysia and tap other forms of clean energy, including hydro-electricity, from TNB’s existing plants. - FMT
