17 deaths, not in the thousands - Cops clarify p-hailing accident stats

Bukit Aman traffic investigation and enforcement department today shared that a total of 17 deaths involving p-hailing riders were recorded in 2020.

Its director Azisman Alias released the figure to correct some media reports which stated that two-thirds of 2,576 deaths involving motorcycles last year were p-hailing riders.

The reports were believed to have been misquoted from a statement by Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong during a media conference.

"Checks showed that the information reported was inaccurate. Based on the statistics by the traffic department in 2019, a total of 3,959 deaths were recorded involving motorcycles as compared to 3,118 deaths in 2020 (of the same category), which is a decline of 21 percent.

"For accidents involving p-hailing motorcycles, in 2019, there was one death and five minor injuries as compared to 2020 which recorded 17 deaths, 10 major injuries, and 64 minor injuries," said Azisman.

He advised all parties to refer to the source from the department to avoid confusion among the public. - Mkini
