Adeeba Kamarulzaman appointed to WHO Science Council

Malaysia’s very own infectious disease expert, Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, has been appointed onto the World Health Organisation (WHO) Science Council.

“The WHO Science Council is a high-level scientific advisory group which will act as the voice of scientific leadership and will advise on advances in science and technology that could directly impact global health,” said Universiti Malaya’s (UM) medicine faculty in a congratulatory post on Facebook today.

Adeeba (above) is the former UM dean of medicine and professor of infectious diseases.

She has also been a prolific campaigner on awareness for HIV and Aids for almost 30 years.

She is the International Aids Society president-elect as well as the Malaysian Aids Foundation chairperson.

Her work has been instrumental in shifting Malaysia’s attitudes away from criminalising drug users infected with HIV/Aids and towards harm reduction.

She also heads the UM Urological Cancer Trust Fund. - Mkini
