KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has recommended that social gatherings be held briefly or temporarily postponed in light of the spike in Covid-19 cases in the state.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesperson Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the increase in the coronavirus cases was worrying and that the state government hoped the community would cooperate by complying with the required standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Such gatherings and celebrations include weddings, engagement ceremonies, aqiqah, tahlil, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions, and retreats, among others.

"Such events are not allowed in district or locality under Movement Control Order (MCO) and enhanced MCO.

"For others, the state government encourages event registration to be done via Sabah Trace to allow the authority to monitor SOP compliance," said Masidi.

He stressed that authority's would not hesitate to take stern action by slapping a RM10,000 compound on anyone found violating SOP.

Today, Sabah recorded 131 new infections, with Tawau having the highest cases (87) followed by Lahad Datu (7) and Putatan (5).

Other districts recorded new Covid-19 cases are Sandakan (5); Tuaran (5); Kota Kinabalu (4); Semporna (3); Papar (2); Penampang (2); Keningau (1); Kinabatangan (1); Beaufort (1); Kunak (1); Nabawan (1); and Ranau (1).

Earlier today, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said Lahad Datu would be placed under movement control order (MCO) for two weeks, effective tomorrow.

The decision was made after there was a sharp increase in daily positive cases with high infectious rate.

Enhanced MCO would also be imposed on Kampung Bukit Belacon, Mukim Segama in Lahad Datu beginning tomorrow.

Thus far, there were 26 positive cumulative cases reported from out of the 543 screenings carried out within the locality.

In Tawau, Kampung Muhibbah Raya will also be under enhanced MCO from April 11-24 after 30 positive cumulative cases were detected. - NST
