Company, four men fined RM12k to RM20k for illegal dumping of solid waste

 

A company providing waste collection service and four individuals were fined between RM12,000 and RM20,000 each by the Sessions Court in Johor Bahru today after they pleaded guilty to illegal dumping of construction and industrial solid waste between July and October last year.

Judge Ahmad Fuad Othman meted out the fine on the company, Sama Mahir Sdn Bhd, represented by its director, Tan Chee Siong, 49, and the four individuals -- Nordin Abdul Said, 39; Tey Chiou Hwai, 44; Chong Wei Lun, 30; and Chen Wei Xuan, 26.

Sama Mahir Sdn Bhd was charged with dumping industrial solid waste on government land at Lot 3053, Mukim Plentong, here, about 10.30am on Sept 1 last year.

Nordin, who is a lorry driver, was charged with illegal dumping of construction solid waste on Lot 705, Mukim Sungai Tiram, here, about 4pm on July 14, last year.

As for Tey, who is a company manager, he was charged with illegal dumping of industrial solid waste at Lot 580, Mukim Tebrau, Johor Bahru, about 4.40pm, on Aug 4 last year, while Chong, who is a lorry driver, was charged with illegal dumping of construction waste on Lot PTD 216964, Kampung Plentong Baru, Johor Bahru, at 4.46pm on Sept 7 the same year.

Chen, who is a company director, was charged with committing the same offence at Lot 211042, Kampung Plentong Baru, about 11am, last Oct 12.

All of them were charged under Section 71 (1) of the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Act 2007 (Act 672), which provides for a fine of between RM10,000 and RM100,000 or imprisonment for up to five years, upon conviction.

The prosecution was conducted by prosecuting officer from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp), Rubiah Maulud, while the company and the four accused were unrepresented.
