'End emergency' group wants to bring 12 opposition leaders to meet Agong

The Committee to End the Emergency has proposed for 12 opposition politicians to represent it for its upcoming audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The ad hoc group was formed to urge the ruler to lift the emergency proclamation.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, committee chairperson Khalid Samad (above) admitted that they had yet to determine who the 12 will be.

“This depends on how many (people) the palace allows.

“If possible, we want to bring 12 people so that all opposition leaders can join us,” he said when contacted this evening.

The Shah Alam MP elaborated that opposition leaders will meet this Thursday (April 29) to discuss and choose its representatives.

“We have yet to finalise this. We will meet this Thursday and discuss who is willing to go. Bringing 12 people is our proposal,” he said.

The palace has yet to stipulate a date or time for the committee’s audience with Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah.

The committee previously said it had been granted an audience through a letter signed by the King’s senior private secretary Nazim Mohd Alim.

This was after Khalid led an entourage to petition the palace to hear the committee’s pleas.

The entourage included Langkawi MP Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Kota Raja MP Mohamad Sabu, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh Tseow Suan, Seputeh MP Teresa Kok Suh Sim, Petaling Jaya MP Maria Chin Abdullah, and Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin.

Former prime minister Mahathir opined that it was important for the king to hear the rakyat’s views about the emergency.

"It is quite clear that a large number of Malays are now angry because they are suffering due to the emergency," he said.

The committee previously launched an online petition where it collected signatures of those who wanted the emergency to be lifted. - Mkini
