Firemen take nine hours to put out recycling factory blaze

JOHOR BARU: It took firefighters nine hours to put out a fire that broke out at a recycling factory here.

Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Saiful Bahri Safar said the early morning blaze, which took place at a factory on Jalan Ban Foo, Kampung Cina in Ulu Tiram, was reported at 6.21am on Saturday (April 24).

A team of 39 firefighters and three fire engines were sent there to extinguish the fire, he said.

“We reached the scene to find that 50% of the building was already destroyed.

“While putting out the flames, our Hazardous Materials Unit (Hazmat) detected chemical substances like hydrogen peroxide and aluminium nitrate in the environment, which react with water.

“We cordoned off a 500sq metre radius from the area while the hazmat team conducted neutralising works to make sure that the air is rid of the substances, ” he said.

Saiful added that nobody was hurt in the incident and the operation was completed at 3.39pm.- Star
