Tawau MP Christina Liew said today she is in the process of preparing 2,000 packs of food aid for her constituents, but it would only be distributed in one or two weeks.
"It should be one-two weeks when I go back to Tawau, and then I will give them (the food packs)," Liew (above) told Malaysiakini when contacted.
She said this when asked for comments on the fate of villagers in Kg Muhibbah Raya, Tawau. The villagers mostly work on daily wages and have been unable to work since the implementation of the enhanced movement control order on April 11.
The enhanced MCO has been extended for 14 days from today until May 8.
Mounting frustrations that the villagers were not given proper assistance led to a brief, peaceful protest yesterday, which eventually saw the arrest of two Borneo Komrad activists as well as five others believed to be their supporters and local villagers.
"Maybe they should have gotten in touch with my officers first before they did what they did.
"Anyway, I am glad they have a lawyer. Their lawyer should know what to do," said the PKR vice-president.
"I have consistently been giving food assistance in Tawau, but in lieu of the latest outbreak, I am now also preparing again about 2,000 packs," she said.
Liew also said she has four officers on duty at her parliament service centre in Tawau and is awaiting their reply with more information about the incident.
"I have instructed my officers to get the full picture before issuing any further statements," she added.
Earlier, local Sabah activist and Tawau resident Rahman Imuda took to Facebook with his Whatsapp message to Liew, which had gone unanswered.
"Actually, since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, I do not see any clear efforts from the Tawau MP to help those in need.
"I suggest that if you can't act for the people of Tawau in these difficult times, then do not contest again (in GE15)," said Rahman.
When contacted, Rahman claimed Liew had been mostly away from Tawau, with her last noted appearance during the Sabah state elections last September.
"We have not seen her at all," he added.
All seven individuals detained for protesting the extension of the enhanced MCO have been remanded for two days ending tomorrow.
Lawyer Raymond Guok also confirmed that the seven men are being investigated under three acts - namely, Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act, Act 188 of the Penal Code regarding the obstruction of civil servants and Section 25 of the Emergency Act, which allows for a compound fine of RM10,000.
