Foreign worker takes own life after allegedly not being paid for 5 months

A construction worker from Pakistan was found dead at a site along Jalan Ampang on April 17.

It is believed that the 30-year-old man (photo) had taken his own life after he was frustrated that the company he worked for allegedly did not pay his salary for five months.

Prior to that, the deceased had posted a video of himself on the social media platform TikTok, saying that he cannot take it anymore after his employer did not pay his salary.

“I want to do a video, my boss has not paid my salary for five months… I cannot take it anymore… My friend, please find my boss,” he was heard saying.

The deceased had also mentioned another video he made which contained the details of his employer.

The clip has since circulated on social media.

When contacted, Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah said based on investigations, the company couldn't pay the deceased his salary from December 2020 to April 2021 due to financial problems.

The victim was identified as Shahzad Ahmed.

“Based on the investigations, the company had financial problems as it was affected by the movement control order. It had offered to pay him an advanced payment but the deceased refused as he wanted his salaries to be fully paid.

“The deceased’s co-worker alleged that the deceased had a family dispute in Pakistan and felt pressured into sending money back home,” he said.

The deceased had worked in Malaysia since 2019 and had no relative here, Ashari said.

When contacted, the deceased’s employer Landseal Sdn Bhd CEO Radha Krishnan said the company would bear the cost to ship his remains to Pakistan and provide a goodwill payment to his family.

When asked to comment on the allegation that the death was triggered by the deceased’s disappointment over unpaid salary, Krishnan said he couldn’t comment as the matter was under police investigation.
