PETALING JAYA: A foreign worker broke his leg after he leapt off the third-storey of a building under construction to avoid arrest by the authorities.

The foreign worker, who was among 269 people detained by immigration authorities during a raid on a construction site in Kuala Lumpur is currently being treated in the hospital.

In a statement, Immigration director-general Khairul Dzaimee Daud said the raid was carried out at the construction site in Kampung Wira Jaya, Setapak following a tip-off.

During the raid, authorities checked documents of 329 people leading to 269 of them being detained for various offences, including not possessing valid identification documents or work passes and overstaying.

Some were even misusing their temporary work passes. These were meant for work in other sectors or companies.

The workers, which included men and women, lived in a kongsi on site.

The detainees would be tested for Covid-19 before they are sent to immigration depots in Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, he said.

He said the Immigration Department will also take action against the owner of the premises, or employers who hired the foreign workers without relevant documents and harbouring those who breached the law. - FMT
