Has PN failed King on emergency, Zahid asks citing Covid-19 spike

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says Parliament should reconvene as the people and the nation cannot be allowed to remain in uncertainty over the pandemic.

PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi this evening questioned the government’s ability to manage the pandemic and suggested it was time to reconvene Parliament after 19 schools in Selangor were shut down due to Covid-19 cases.

In a Facebook post, Zahid said that the emergency declared by the Agong in January was aimed at containing the outbreak.

Yet, four months on, the infection rate remains high.

“Does this mean the Perikatan Nasional-led government has failed to implement the Agong’s instructions?” he asked, adding that if Putrajaya had run out of ideas to combat the pandemic, then it was time to hand it over to Parliament.

Zahid said that the Dewan Rakyat was the best place to have the various quarters give their input and to take the views of the people as well.

He added that the current government could no longer use the emergency as an excuse to stop a sitting as the King had previously said Parliament could be reconvened during this period.

“However, the prime minister has yet to advise the Agong on when to reconvene Parliament,” he said.

“Could the Yang di-Pertuan Agong just call for a Parliament sitting without the advice from the prime minister?

“If so, it would be better as the rakyat and the nation cannot be allowed to remain in such uncertainty.”

A few days ago the Petaling district health office ordered the temporary closure of 19 schools for disinfection and close contact tracing of students and teachers following several Covid-19 cases. - FMT
