How will a new deputy minister put food on the table, asks Syed Saddiq

Former minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman says the government seems to have enough money to appoint a new deputy minister.

PETALING JAYA: Former youth and sports minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has questioned the need to appoint a new deputy minister when the people are still struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic.

In a Facebook post, Syed Saddiq quipped that the government seemed to have enough money for another person to be appointed a deputy minister.

“Not only are people not allowed to travel now, but I wonder how the government thinks appointing a new tourism deputy minister can help fill the people’s stomachs,” he said.

The Muar MP accused the Perikatan Nasional administration of prioritising its political survival over the public’s survival.

He pointed out the delays in providing free laptops, lack of cash aid for students and making the public dip into their Employees Provident Fund (EPF) savings.

“Ministers and deputy ministers get to be grateful for their salaries and positions.

“Meanwhile, the people have lost their jobs, closed their businesses and their cars and houses have had to be auctioned off,” he said.

It was reported that STAR secretary-general Guan Dee Koh Hoi will be appointed as the new tourism, arts and culture deputy minister. He expected to be sworn in today.

Guan Dee will replace party president Jeffrey Kitingan after he stepped down to take on the role of Sabah deputy chief minister. - FMT
