KUALA LUMPUR: An oil spill from an accident involving two lorries left thousands of motorists stuck in a 4-kilometre crawl at KM15.9 (northbound) on Guthrie Highway, this evening.

The highway concessionaire, Prolintas Expressway Sdn Bhd in a statement, said, in the 4.30pm incident the lorry laden with sand had crashed into a palm oil tanker, causing a leakage and subsequent oil spill across all three lanes.

Due to safety reasons, the highway management activated a contingency protocol by redirecting traffic by opening a contraflow lane on the opposite lane.

"The northbound lanes are temporarily closed for clearing and cleaning works. Once the oil spill has been cleared and it's deemed safe, we will reopen the lanes for traffic," it said in a statement last night.

For the latest updates on the reopening status, Prolintas said motorists can could check their Twitter page at @GCEtrafik.

Earlier, Sungai Buloh district police chief Superintendent Shafa'aton Abu Bakar confirmed the accident between the two lorries, but a police report has yet to be filed by either drivers.

"So far, no police report has been lodged, but there's still time," she said referring to the 24 hours duration given for a report to be lodged from the time of an accident.

She said Guthrie had opened an alternative road for those who were stuck in the congestion. - NST
