Ministry sending 11 more ventilators to Sarawak after previous units fail to work

According to the health ministry, the 10 units sent last week were used in the Sungai Buloh hospital and were in good condition.

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry said it would send 11 additional ventilators to Sarawak after an assemblyman complained that eight of the units sent previously did not work.

Of the 11, five will be sent to the Sibu Hospital, two to the Sarikei Hospital and four to the Bintulu Hospital.

This is on top of the eight ventilators and eight ICU patient monitors to the Sarikei Hospital.

Earlier today, Bukit Assek assemblyman Irene Chang said the 10 ventilators that arrived last Tuesday were sent to the Sibu Hospital (5 units), Bintulu Hospital (3) and Sarikei Hospital (2).

She said the units sent to Sibu and Bintulu were not functioning and had since been sent for repairs.

“The two units sent to Sarikei Hospital are also not functioning well as the screens keep freezing up and need to be restarted constantly, which is a serious threat to the patients,” she said in a statement.

The ministry said that the 10 ventilators, which had been used at the Sungai Buloh Hospital for emergencies, were in good condition when it was shipped out on Monday, April 12.

The ministry went on to say that the damage to the ventilators could have occurred during the transportation of the units to the respective hospitals.

“It could be due to the oxygen sensor and main circuit board, which is very sensitive to changes to temperature and humidity as well as vibrations during transportation.”

The ministry also said it was in the process of acquiring additional ventilators for the entire nation. - FMT
